Loved your story, but I am curious about why you have mixed feelings about Bob Feller. Besides being a great pitcher, he was a hero to me because he volunteered in World War II and was in major combat operations as a leader of men, not like some super-athletes who went into “special services,” which was a euphemism for “exempt from combat, just represent the military and play ball.”
I had a reason to hate Feller and I did, irrationally. I was a Washington Senators fan when Bob struck out either 17 or 18 of my beloved non-heroes. Fifty years later, I had a chance to shake his hand and talk to him, but I refused. I looked over at him several times, and he looked over at me looking over at him, but I wouldn’t budge. My wife said, “C’mon, get over it.” I just couldn’t do it–a blend of loyalty and stupidity.
    Seasons best and beyond.
    Sandy
