Be a Responsible Pet Owner – Get Pet Insurance!

IPet Insurancen all my years as a veterinarian, one problem stands out among pet owners – lack of pet insurance. Most pet owners think of pet insurance merely as an unnecessary expense. I will tell you right now that it is not. In fact, I always encourage my patients’ owners to consider taking out pet insurance for their furry companions.

How Can You Benefit from Pet Insurance?

There are a lot of ways you, as a pet owner, can benefit from pet insurance. However, its main benefit is the peace of mind you can get by knowing that your pet will be taken care of no matter your financial situation. Another benefit is the fact that you are protected from spending thousands of dollars on veterinary bills in case of emergencies.

Let me tell you a little story.

When a patient of mine, a dog named Alistair, was diagnosed with a heart defect a couple of years ago, one of the first things I asked his owners was if they had pet insurance. The reason I asked was because the treatment required surgery and long term medication. Needless to say, the costs could get very expensive. Thankfully, they did. His owners said that pet insurance was at the top of their list when they first got their dog. They went on to tell me that they compared policies offered by various insurance companies like Pet Plan and decided to get the one that offered the most comprehensive coverage.

If Alistair’s owners didn’t have pet insurance, they would have spent at least $5,000 for his treatment, excluding the costs of his medications (at this price you might as well go to a vet school and treat your dog on your own). Of course, there are organizations that help pet owners who cannot shoulder the medical expenses of their pets. But the thing is, they would have to go through processes that take time. Time that Alistair did not have. That is of course, if they even get approved for financial assistance.

As much as I would like to offer my services pro bono, I cannot extend that courtesy to every client who walks into the doors of my clinic. This is why I always reiterate the importance of having pet insurance to my clients.

Tips for Getting Pet Insurance

  1. Do Your Research

These days, almost every piece of information you need is readily available over the internet. Yes, that includes pet insurance quotes. You can get in touch with pet insurance companies with just a few clicks of a button and ask for a quote.

  1. Know Your Pet

As they say, knowledge is power. In this case, it is important that you are familiar with the common health problems that arise for your pet’s breed. This will allow you to make a well informed decision on the type of coverage your pet insurance should have. Of course, this will also give you the chance to save money.

  1. Don’t Get Lured in By “Special Offers”

Pet insurance agents will offer you all sorts of “special offers” just so you will sign up for a more expensive policy. Don’t. Be a wise shopper. Know exactly what you need and stick to your guns. Unless your pet is especially susceptible to illnesses, a pet insurance policy with basic coverage is usually enough.
